I walked across the beachfront outside my house, kicking sand and thinking about everything that had happened. It was easy for me to feel sorry for myself tonight. After all, everything seemed to be slipping away like Gulf water through my cupped hands.

First, Davey skipped town in hopes of finding himself or something. Apparently, that process required him to stop answering my calls and instructing his family not to tell me where he was or what he was up to. Now, after worrying and wondering where my best friend in the world might be, it turns out I might have to do the same with Mia.

I couldn’t believe it. Though I had run it around in my head countless times in the half an hour or so since I’d left Mia’s house, I still couldn’t quite wrap my mind around it. She was leaving. Regardless of what she said or how much she’d promised me she was going to take my wishes or my thoughts into consideration, the truth was, she hadn’t.

She hadn’t mentioned it to me at all. She was calling movers. She was considering new homes. She was very likely canvassing for new jobs, and through all that, she hadn’t so much as mentioned it to me.

I felt hurt, I felt betrayed, and most of all, I felt spent. It was like this last stretch of time was out to get me, like my luck was finally changing. Wendell wanted to make a movie about me, the luckiest guy in the world, the man who won the lottery on a lark and escapes death on a daily basis. The truth was, I wasn’t nearly as lucky as all that. In fact, I seemed to be a day or so away from losing everything that mattered to me.

The phone rang in my pocket, and I pulled it out. I looked at the screen, a little amazed at the number that flashed across it.

“What do I owe this pleasure?” I asked, smiling despite myself as I put the phone to my ear and answered it.

The voice on the other end was familiar and every bit as welcome and pleasant as it had ever been.

“You tell me,” Jessie St. James said, and I could practically hear the woman biting her lip on the other end of the line. “I got a call from Campbell saying you were down in the dumps and there was nothing he could do to make you feel better.”

I sighed, cursing under my breath and wishing I hadn’t texted my brother about what I had just experienced. Though I understood why he did it, I never imagined he’d reach out to Jessie to help make me feel better. In fact, I didn’t think he’d do much of anything at all.

“Now what on earth could be so wrong that the Lucky boys couldn’t figure it out together?” she asked.

Campbell hadn’t met Jessie face to face when she and I were engaged. He and I weren’t on speaking terms then, and we wouldn’t be until years after Jessie and I had decided to call it quits.
